Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Art Jigsaw Puzzles

Getting Started

How do I play a puzzle?

Click any puzzle card from the gallery to start. Pieces will scatter randomly. Use your mouse (or finger on mobile) to drag pieces together. When two pieces are close and correctly aligned, they'll snap together automatically.

Pro tip: Start with edge pieces or distinctive colors to build a frame first.
Does it work on mobile?

Yes! The site is fully mobile-friendly with touch support. You can:

  • Drag pieces with your finger
  • Pinch to zoom in/out
  • Two-finger drag to pan the canvas
Is it really free?

Yes, completely free. No ads, no subscriptions, no hidden costs. All artwork is public domain, and we believe great art should be accessible to everyone.

Puzzles & Difficulty

What do the difficulty levels mean?
  • Easy (50 pieces) — Perfect for beginners. Typically older art with distinct areas
  • Medium (99 pieces) — Good challenge. Impressionist paintings
  • Hard (165 pieces) — For experienced puzzlers. Modern art with complex patterns
  • Expert (270 pieces) — Serious challenge. Contemporary and abstract works
Why is this puzzle so hard?

Abstract or monochromatic paintings are naturally harder because:

  • Fewer distinct reference points
  • Similar colors throughout
  • Repeating patterns
Try this: Use the "Shuffle" button to reorganize pieces, or zoom in to see fine details that help distinguish pieces.
Can I save my progress?

Currently, progress isn't saved if you close the browser. We're working on adding this feature! Coming soon:

  • Auto-save progress
  • Resume puzzles
  • Track completion history

Artwork & Sources

Where do the images come from?

All images are authentic artworks from major museums:

  • Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York)
  • National Gallery of Art (Washington DC)
  • Art Institute of Chicago
  • Rijksmuseum (Amsterdam)

These museums have released their collections as public domain under Creative Commons Zero (CC0) licenses.

Are these real paintings?

Yes! Every puzzle features a genuine artwork from a museum collection. These are professionally photographed by the museums themselves — not stock images or AI art. You're looking at real Van Goghs, Monets, Vermeers, and hundreds of other masters.

Can I use these images elsewhere?

Yes! All artwork is public domain. You can:

  • Use them in your own projects
  • Print them
  • Share them
  • Modify them

No attribution required, though it's appreciated. The website code itself is copyrighted, but the artwork is free for all.

Can I suggest a painting to add?

Absolutely! Contact us with:

  • Artist name
  • Painting title
  • Museum (if known)

We'll check if it's available in public domain and add it to our queue.

Technical Issues

Touch controls aren't working on my phone

Try these fixes:

  • Make sure you're using a modern browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox)
  • Update your browser to the latest version
  • Clear your browser cache
  • Disable any browser extensions that might interfere

Still not working? Let us know your device and browser details.

Images won't load

This usually means a slow connection. The museum images are high-quality (large files). Try:

  • Waiting a bit longer — images are loading in the background
  • Refreshing the page
  • Checking your internet connection
  • Trying a different browser
Why is the puzzle running slowly?

Expert puzzles (270 pieces) can be demanding on older devices. Try:

  • Closing other browser tabs
  • Restarting your browser
  • Choosing a lower difficulty level
  • Using a desktop computer for Expert puzzles
Do I need to create an account?

No! You can play immediately without signing up. We don't require accounts because:

  • Faster access
  • Better privacy
  • No passwords to remember

We may add optional accounts in the future for features like cloud-saved progress.
